Course overview
AML for Payment Institutions and FinTechs – From Regulatory Compliance to Operational Investigations This practical two-hour training provides employees of payment institutions with a clear understanding of how Luxembourg and EU AML/CFT requirements must be translated into effective day-to-day controls. Designed around the specific risks faced by payment service providers, the course addresses digital and cross-border payments, merchant acquiring, remote onboarding, transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, fraud-related activity, outsourcing and third-party oversight. Participants learn how to apply a genuine risk-based approach throughout the customer lifecycle, from onboarding and customer due diligence to alert handling, investigation, escalation and suspicious activity reporting. Particular attention is given to the quality of evidence, the documentation of decisions and the responsibilities of the Board, senior management, compliance, the MLRO, operational teams and internal audit. Through practical examples and case studies involving mule-account networks, merchant laundering and sanctions circumvention, participants develop a structured method for analysing unusual activity, identifying inconsistencies, testing legitimate explanations and drafting clear, defensible investigation conclusions. The training also explains how investigation outcomes should support transaction-monitoring improvements, management reporting, AML Committee oversight and continuous enhancement of the control framework. By the end of the session, participants will be able to make AML decisions that are risk-based, operationally effective and defensible before management, auditors, the CSSF and the Luxembourg Financial Intelligence Unit. The content reflects the Luxembourg and European regulatory environment applicable to payment institutions.
